Selecting the Right File Transfer Protocol
VanDyke Software's file transfer client, SecureFX®, supports multiple file transfer protocols. For the highest level of security available, we recommend using SFTP for file transfer operations. However, there may be situations or environments when SFTP is not a viable option. Understanding the different protocols and the safeguards they provide may help you select the compatible protocol that provides the most data security possible.
Non-Secure File Transfer Protocol
FTP is one of the most common file transfer protocols used for Internet-based operations, but it provides no data security. All data—usernames, passwords, and file contents—are transferred in the clear, making operations vulnerable to a number of hacking attacks.
FTP may suffice for internal file transfers behind a firewall where data security is not an issue. FTP may be the only compatible protocol for file transfers with a legacy system. For all other operations, a secure file transfer protocol is highly recommended.

Secure File Transfer Protocol Options
SFTP is an ideal protocol for file transfer operations as it provides all safeguards inherent in the SSH2 network protocol. Using SFTP requires both client and server support. If file transfers involve a server that does not recognize SFTP, SecureFX supports other secure protocols:
- SCP
- FTP over SSL
SCP relies on SSH2 safeguards. However, file management capability may be limited to copying only.
