How to Configure Debug Logging in SecureFX®

Here are the steps for generating a debug log in SecureFX:

  1. From the main menu, navigate to Options / Global Options to open the Global Options dialog.
  2. Navigate to the File Transfer / Options / Advanced category and enable the Enable log output to file option.
  3. Screenshot showing Trace Options menu
  4. Specify a path and name for the log file to which SecureFX should write. Select your Desktop folder or another folder of your choice and a name for the log file, such as SecureFX_Log.txt.

For example, if you're on Windows:

    %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\SecureFX_Log.txt

For example, if you're on macOS/Ubuntu:

~\Desktop\SecureFX_Log.txt Screenshot showing the Log filename entry box
  5. Press the OK button to close the Global Options dialog.
  6. (Optional) If you need to increase the verbosity of the data being written to the log, navigate to the File Transfer / Advanced category of Session Options for the session of note and set the Trace level value to a maximum of 9. The default value for this option is 2. Level 9 trace logging will involve packet-level logging, but does not expose the password credentials used by SecureFX to authenticate to the file transfer server. This step may be requested of you by VanDyke Software technical support staff when additional verbosity is needed to troubleshoot a protocol-level behavior.

Note: If the File Transfer / Advanced category of your Session Options dialog doesn't display a Trace level setting, you may want to consider upgrading to a newer version of SecureFX (version 9.1 or later).
  7. Screenshot showing Session Options menu with Logging Trace level set to 9
  8. Attempt your connection again. Debug information should now be written to the log file you specified earlier.
