Albuquerque, N.M. (December 17, 2015) — VanDyke Software®, a developer of multi-platform secure terminal emulation and file transfer software, today announced the official release of the VShell® 4.2 server. VShell 4.2 for Windows gives system administrators the ability to access virtual root paths as a different user than the logged in user and introduces new time-saving and security enhancements.
The new "Connect As" functionality in VShell 4.2 for Windows allows administrators to specify credentials that will be used when a virtual root configuration points to a network resource (SMB/CIFS shares, NAS storage devices, etc.). "Historically, it's been difficult to successfully configure access to network resources when a file transfer client is using certificate-based (or public-key) authentication," said Chris McElveny, VanDyke Software's product director for VShell. "This new feature can vastly simplify access to network resources while still enforcing the security best practice of password-less authentication."
Also in VShell 4.2 for Windows is an import/export tool that allows the VShell administrator to easily back up and copy the VShell configuration directly from within the VShell Control Panel.
To help save administrators' time, VShell for Windows adds a Control Panel management interface for adding, editing, and removing entries from the deny hosts/users files. On all platforms, VShell now includes a deny host white list and the ability to deny connections based on user name.
Security and encryption enhancements on Windows include support for x509v3-ssh-rsa and x509v3-ssh-dss algorithms as specified by RFC 6187. In addition, VShell FTPS for Windows adds support for client certificate authentication, as well as the ability to configure SSL (TLS) encryption and authentication options on a per listen address basis.
VShell 4.2 for Windows improves the VShell Monitor, a real-time connection monitoring tool. The VShell Monitor can now be run in the system tray, automatically start on administrator logon, optionally display connection notifications, and provide easy access to the VShell Control Panel and Help. Also new are color indicators that make it easy to distinguish between authenticated and non-authenticated connections.
The VShell Secure Shell server replaces Telnet and FTP for secure network administration and end-user access on Windows and UNIX platforms. Precision control over privileges, the ability to fine tune the Secure Shell environment, and a wide selection of strong authentication methods provide a flexible solution that grows with evolving business and security environments.
