VSHELL SERVER 2.2 RAISES THE BAR FOR SECURE SHELL (SSH2) ON WINDOWS AND UNIX

New VanDyke Software Server Tested For Security by @stake Prior to Release

Albuquerque, N.M. (August 12, 2003) — VanDyke Software™, a leader in powerful and affordable Secure Shell solutions, today announced the official release of version 2.2 of its VShell™ SSH2 server for Windows and UNIX platforms including Red Hat Linux, Sun Solaris, and FreeBSD. Strong customer demand for a server offering fine-tune controls over access and privileges and support for enterprise-wide authentication led to the features included in this new version.

VShell offers precise and granular control over end user privileges, automation tools to reduce administrator time spent on routine tasks, and industry-leading support for authentication methods favored by enterprise organizations. VShell 2.2 is the first Secure Shell server to offer built-in support for Kerberos (v5) authentication via GSSAPI. Customers told VanDyke that patch management to support advanced authentication and security features is making them reconsider the use of open source alternatives.

"VShell 2.2 raises the bar for Secure Shell in the enterprise," said kelli burkinshaw, VanDyke's Product Director. "Our customers told us they wanted a cross-platform Secure Shell solution that offered fine-tune control over privileges and security backed by the level of technical support we have built our relationships on. With the addition of support for Kerberos authentication, we're continuing our commitment to deliver the authentication options our enterprise customers need to standardize their network environments."

VShell 2.2 extends any server's ability to act as a focal point for information sharing in corporate, government, and educational environments, combining simple, intuitive configuration with the strong security of the open Secure Shell protocol. VShell uses Access Control Lists (ACLs) to align network access, file transfer, and application tunneling privileges with a company's security policies.

VanDyke submitted the code for its UNIX versions to @stake, a digital security consulting firm, to perform a vulnerability assessment and provide recommendations to make the server as secure as possible. Rigorous testing by @stake allowed VanDyke to resolve a number of potential vulnerabilities prior to the public beta release.

"Security continues to be a key requirement in the software development process. VanDyke has implemented secure software engineering practices that have resulted in a solid product," said Ollie Whitehouse, director of security architecture, @stake, Inc.

A fully-functional evaluation copy of VShell can be downloaded from the company's web site. Evaluators have full access to VanDyke's expert technical support to assist with installation, configuration, and testing. VShell is available in three editions: Personal, Workgroup, or Enterprise and in Starter Kits which include client licenses for SecureCRT® and SecureFX®.
