NEW VSHELL SERVER RELEASE TAKES FIRST STEP TOWARD PKI IN SECURE SHELL

Version 1.2 of Secure Server Delivers X.509 Certificate Support for Smart Cards and Tokens

Albuquerque, N.M. (October 18, 2001) — VanDyke Software, a leading provider of security and access software, today concluded a six-week beta cycle with the official release of its VShell™ 1.2 server for Microsoft® Windows® NT®. The new release delivers X.509 certificate support and other enhancements to improve security and management of public keys.

VShell 1.2 enables the use of smart cards and other physical security devices for highly secure two-factor public-key authentication with its file-based X.509 certificate support. Two-factor authentication requires both a physical device and a password or phrase to gain access to network resources.

"The immediate value of X.509 certificate support is to expand authentication options," said Jeff P. Van Dyke, president of VanDyke Software. "X.509 is a building block for large-scale network security, and is an important first step in our development of a public-key infrastructure for Secure Shell."

VShell public key-only authentication allows administrators to automate critical business tasks securely and provides the option to simplify user logon to secure access, data tunneling, and secure file transfer services. VShell 1.2 further improves authentication by supporting the OpenSSH public-key format used in the popular open-source Secure Shell server.

VShell, introduced in December 2000, was the first shipping commercial SSH2(TM) server for Microsoft Windows NT and 2000. VShell 1.2 is available for a free 30-day evaluation by downloading the fully functional software from www.vandyke.com. Three license configurations are available: VShell Personal for US$249, VShell Workgroup for US$399, and VShell Enterprise for US$799.

VanDyke Software is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The SecureCRT® and SecureFX® SSH clients complete the company's secure product offering. Further information about VanDyke Software is available on the Internet at www.vandyke.com, or by calling (505) 332-5755.
