SecureCRT™ 2.2 delivers SSH data encryption for Windows
Albuquerque, N.M. (July 22, 1998) — Van Dyke Technologies, Inc., a provider of quality Internet software, announced today the official release of SecureCRT 2.2 for Windows® NT and Windows 95. SecureCRT is a new product that offers Secure Shell (SSH) capability to network and Internet computer users who want to minimize their exposure to eavesdropping and theft of information. SecureCRT builds on the success of Van Dyke’s CRT product, an industry-leading Windows terminal emulator supporting telnet, rlogin and serial access protocols. Fully functional evaluation software may be downloaded from www.vandyke.com/download/index.html.
Secure Shell Protocol (SSH) provides a standard, secure method of accessing corporate servers which encrypts terminal sessions and other application data traffic. SSH provides the ability to encrypt a terminal session with password or RSA user authentication, and a choice of cipher algorithms. Strong encryption technology allows encryption of the entire session between SecureCRT on the PC and the SSH server. Cipher options include Blowfish, DES, 3DES, and RC4.
SecureCRT’s SSH capabilities extend well beyond secure terminal emulation. A powerful feature called port forwarding allows SSH to provide an umbrella encryption service to many TCP/IP services. SSH "forwards" a port by having an application redirect its SMTP, POP3, or other TCP data through SecureCRT’s SSH client instead of connecting directly to the remote network port. SecureCRT then encrypts the stream to the remote SSH server. Thus the network data traffic of many existing applications like POP3 e-mail clients can easily be made secure without major changes.
Robustness and quality of terminal emulation set SecureCRT apart from its competitors. "People who use terminal emulators live in their applications all day long. To me that means the terminal emulators should never crash, but unfortunately crashes are too common. Van Dyke Technologies is committed to delivering the most bug-free software possible," said Jeff Van Dyke, president. In addition to SSH support, SecureCRT 2.2 includes all the advanced terminal emulation capabilities of CRT 2.2. SecureCRT supports VT100, VT102, VT220, and ANSI terminal emulations. All of SecureCRT's emulations support ANSI color. Custom keymaps and scripts provide extensive customization to support a broad range of terminal applications. Many CRT features like the Quick Connect dialog and SOCKS firewall support provide easy, transparent access.
Public key encryption technology for SecureCRT is licensed from RSA Data Security, Inc., of San Mateo, California, a subsidiary of Security Dynamics (www.rsa.com). Because of the software’s strong encryption capabilities, U.S. export restrictions limit distribution of SecureCRT to the U.S. and Canada.
SecureCRT 2.2 is priced at $99 USD for a single user and $700 USD for a 10-user license.
Van Dyke Technologies has over 250,000 licensed users of its flagship product CRT in over 70 countries since version 1.0 was released in 1995. The company also sells AbsoluteFTP, a popular FTP client for Windows. Van Dyke is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
