1. Fall IT Survey: Intrusion, Employee, Outsourcing Concerns
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The results of VanDyke Software's Fall 2011 survey on network security show that IT staff assess the impact of outsourcing very differently. On another front, small organizations are seeing an increase in intrusions, while those at the enterprise level continue to vary the most from year to year. Finally, though not a predominant cause of problems, unauthorized access attributed to employees has increased significantly in the last year.

Of respondents whose organizations outsource technology jobs offshore, 36% believed the practice had a positive impact on their organization’s network security, while 36% said it had a negative impact and 28% felt there was no impact. By contrast, in 2010 nearly half (48%) felt there was a negative impact.

Fifty percent of small organizations experienced an intrusion of their user machines, office network, or servers, compared to 36% in 2005. Midrange companies experienced steady but high rates, 58% in 2011. 2011 saw a significant decline in intrusions at large companies, from 67% in 2010 to 49% in 2011 (rates were 56% in 2008 and 41% in 2009). Small indicates 100 to 999 U.S. employees, midsize from 1,000 to 4,999, and large 5,000 or more employees.

Unauthorized access by current and former employees increased from 6% in 2010 to 11% in 2011. Among the many reasons for intrusions, those related to employees were carelessness or negligence (12% of cases) and employee web usage (6%). Other causes or contributing factors included inadequate security policies (17%) and hacking (14%).

The seventh annual survey of 350 IT managers and network administrators was commissioned by VanDyke Software and conducted by Amplitude Research. Click here to read the three press releases on our Fall survey.

2. Tip: Failed Authentication Trigger Guards Against Intrusion
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The online tip on using a VShell trigger to send e-mail on a failed authentication event has been updated. This use of triggers is worth a network administrator's attention, as a first-line defense against unauthorized intrusion.

Call for Testers: SecureCRT, ClientPack for Windows
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

VanDyke Software development needs volunteers to provide feedback on releases of upcoming SecureCRT and ClientPack versions.

SecureCRT will add TFTP server capability, allowing network admins to transfer executable images and backup configurations directly to SecureCRT without the need to install a separate TFTP server.

In ClientPack for Windows, an IBinaryStream object has been added to VRALib that supports streaming binary files. Supporting functions were added to the IRemoteExec, iFileSystemObject, and IFileObject objects.

If you would like to test SecureCRT or ClientPack, please send e-mail to Maureen Jett at .
